With Riyadh International Industry Week coming up (21 - 24 June) I wanted to highlight how panelists can make a difference to the audience experience.

Many executives are invited to join conference panels because of their expertise. But expertise alone does not make someone a thought leader.

A panelist answers questions. A thought leader adds perspective.

When a moderator asks a question, most panelists respond with information, facts, or examples from their organisation. Thought leaders go one step further. They connect the topic to broader trends, challenge conventional thinking, and help the audience see opportunities or risks they may not have considered.

The audience rarely remembers every answer given during a panel discussion. What they remember are the insights that changed their thinking or behaviour.

Before your next panel appearance, ask yourself: "What unique perspective can I contribute to this conversation?"

The goal is not simply to answer the question. The goal is to elevate the discussion.

The most influential speakers are not those with all the answers. They are the ones who provide a new lens through which others can view the future. That is the difference between a panelist and a thought leader.
